Double Award-Winning Blackbrook Diversion

The only major new road scheme completed in the Northwest in 2007, and delivered both on time and within budget, the Blackbrook Diversion has scooped two major national awards.

It has won the 2007 Green Civil Engineering Project of the Year for its high commitment to environmental sustainability throughout its development. The scheme has removed up to 20,000 vehicles a day from Haydock, while 76% of the materials used had a recycled content. During construction heritage sites were also opened up at the former Garswood Colliery and Stanley Bank Country Park.

These facts were also key to winning the second award - the Public Project of the Year category winner at the Builder and Engineer Awards - one of the main criteria for which was a demonstrable contribution to reducing carbon footprint.
